| Is online casino gambling a sin? | | 12 Oct 2006 | Politicians looking for votes love to appear as if they are fighting the evils of society: sins. So now with the presidential elections looming over America, online casinos are feeling the wrath of many a hopeful senator that are trying to fashion themselves as an image of righteousness. Online casino websites are a rather unlikely enemy, one might add. They offer entertainment to the demanding public, and one can hardly say that it lures players against their will or withholds information from them.
Every player at an online casino knows that there is a chance he might win money, and a chance he might loose money. That’s the whole idea. Whereas concern regarding the age and inexperience of young gamblers might have a point, the online casino industry already has ways to deal with this problem if would be regulated.
But the interest of the Congress, so it seems, is not in sensible regulation. The ban for the online casino industry to take wagers from American citizens has been deemed unenforceable, and in itself was so hurriedly written as to not even have been presented properly to the Congress. It is rather impossible to go after each single player at an online casino and trace back all the payments, especially if they run through services like Western Union or Paypal. Online casinos, in the midst of facing this heavy blow, can be confident though: just like with alcohol and cigarettes, if people love it, they’ll do it anyway. |
